Netherlands. Proof Gold Ducat 2025

Netherlands. Proof Gold Ducat 2025

$725.00

The Royal Dutch Mint annually strikes these legal coins, based on the originals from the 16th and 18th century. All Dutch Gold Ducats, no matter which mint they came from, had a standard weight a purity of 983/1000 fine. This led to their worldwide acceptance, and placed them among the most important trade coins in world history.
These new Gold Ducats continue to explore Dutch trade history. Until 2025, a different commodity that had an important role in Dutch trade history during the Gold Ducat era is being highlighted each year. The series started in 2022 with the wine trade in the Baltic Sea area. This year, the focus of the last coin in the series is the coffee trade, represented by the coffee beans on the reverse.

As always, the obverse has the historic knight in armor with arrows, designed by Utrecht Mint engraver from 1763 until 1795, Johan Willem Marmé. The Latin phrase Concordia Res Parvae Crescunt means “Unity makes Strength.” On the reverse, Mo. Aur. Reg. Belgii Ad Legem Imperii means“Gold coin of the Kingdom of the Netherlands by law of the Empire.”
Black Gold
The coffee bean was discovered in Ethiopia and brought to Yemen by merchants. There, the beans were further distributed across the Arabian Peninsula. In the 16th century, people in Europe also became acquainted with the coffee bean and in the 17th century it was the Dutch who became the first commercial coffee exporting country due to the cultivation of coffee plantations on Celebes and Sumatra. But the Netherlands was also a major player in the trading of coffee in Europe. Today, an average of 2.4 cups of coffee per day is consumed in the Netherlands.
