Coin Issued in Honor of Hungarian-American Mathematics Prize Winner Pater Lax was born in Budapest to a Jewish family in 1926. His family left in for America 1941 and he soon enrolled at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. His Army service took him to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico where he worked on mathematics. He later graduated with a PhD from NYU. In 1987 Israel’s Wolf Foundation awarded him its Prize in Mathematics “for his outstanding contributions to many areas of analysis and applied mathematics.” It said his influence has been profound and decisive in both pure and applied mathematics. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1986, and the Abel Prize in 2005.
