Hungary 10,000 Forint 2021. Szeged University Centennial. Silver Proof

The University of Szeged is one of Hungary’s leading institutions of higher education. Its roots reach back to the University of Kolozsvár (now Cluj-Napoca), which was founded in 1581 (440 years ago). The university relocated to Szeged after the Treaty of Trianon in 1921, marking the start of higher education in the city. Its historical academic significance is underlined by a distinguished Hungarian and international faculty, including Albert Szent-Györgyi, who in 1937 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research there.
The University’s twelve faculties and Teacher Training Cent
er offer hundreds of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, specialized training and adult education courses, on subjects ranging from healthcare, humanities, economics, law, science and pedagogy to agriculture, engineering and fine arts.
Hungary is issuing a 10,000 forint silver and a 2,000 forint
copper-nickel collector coin of the same design to mark the university’s centennial. The front of each shows the facade of the Rector’s Office of the University of Szeged, with the iconic fountain on Dugonics Square in the foreground. The legend reads “100 ÉVES A SZEGEDI FELSŐOKTATÁS” (100 years of higher education in Szeged).
The reverse has a portrait of a young Albert Szent-Györgyi, with
his signature to the left. The circular legend on the top reads “SZEGEDI TUDOMÁNYEGYETEM” (University of Szeged), while the lower legend, offset slightly to the right, reads “SZENT-GYÖRGYI ALBERT EGYETEME” (Alma mater of Albert Szent-Györgyi).

The coin is 38.61 mm in diameter. The silver coin is struck in .925 fine silver and weighs 31.46 grams. Mintage is 5,000 pieces.
