Though born in Belgium, Charles Van Depoele emigrated to America in 1869 to make a career in Detroit. In no time, he became a true pioneer of electricity with almost 250 patents to his name. With his 175th birthday just around the corner, the Royal Mint of Belgium is issuing a Silver Proof 5 euro coin to put his achievements back in the spotlight. The obverse shows Van Depoele's profile and his most important inventions: the electric arc lamp, the dynamo with carbon brushes and the electric tram.
