On January 23, 1579 the Union of Utrecht united the seven provinces of the northern Netherlands — Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Friesland and the rural districts of Groningen, and became the foundation of the Republic of the United Netherlands.
In 1979, on its 400th anniversary, this 2½ guilder (Rijksdaalder) was struck as a circulating commemorative coin. A portrait of then-Queen Juliana is on the obverse while the reverse has the text: ‘GRONDSLAG VAN DE NEDERLANDSE STAAT, UNIE VAN UTRECHT 1579’ (Basis of the Dutch state, Union of Utrecht 1579).
Fortunately for collectors, in 2017 the Dutch Mint was able to come up with 7,500 quality examples that they placed is this historic commemorative coin card.
