Legal tender 500 escudo coin for the hundredth anniversary of
the death of one of the masters of modern Portuguese literature,
José Maria Eça de Queiroz. Sculptor Paulo Guilherme D'Eça
Leal designed the coin to reflect Queirioz's literary style:
the author's head is depicted in a critical and acute form.
In the surrounding circle are the name Eça de Queiroz and the
dates 1900-2000. The other side contains the arms of the Portuguese
Republic, its name and the denomination.
Two laurel branches serve as a tribute to the author. The coin
comes in two versions:
The first is a standard issue sterling silver coin with a diameter
of 30 mm (1.18 inches) and a weight of 14 grams. Authorized
mintage is 5,000 proof coins at an issue price of $44.75.
The second is a bimetallic version in which a 3.1 gram (1/10
ounce), 22 karat piece of gold is laminated onto the reverse
design. Struck in proof quality only, 5,000 coins are being
released at $125.00 each.
In addition, the Portuguese State Mint is preparing an additional
5,000 two-coin sets – one coin silver, one bimetallic –
in a custom case for $159.50. |
