Forty-seven years after the late Robert Friedberg (1912-1963) broke
new ground when the government granted permission to print photographs
of American paper money for the first time, the sixteenth edition
of Paper Money of the United States has been published by The Coin
& Currency Institute of Clifton, N.J. This is the sixteenth fully
revised edition of the standard reference work since the original
version in 1953. This one, by Arthur L. Friedberg and his brother,
Ira S. Friedberg, includes color photographs illustrating the collection
of the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
From the first year of paper money, 1861, to the present, the fronts
and backs of all classes and types of currency, from 3 cents to
10,000 dollars are illustrated. There are more than 800 photographs.
These are accompanied by text which lists, describes and evaluates
(more than 8,000 prices) every variety of paper money issued. The
result is a complete pictorial, descriptive and numismatic history
of the currency of the United States. There are also sections on
Colonial and Continental Currency (notes issued from 1680 to 1788),
a comprehensive listing by type of the issues of the Confederate
States of America, and a complete listing of National Bank issuers.
New to this edition is a section of the Treasury Notes of the War
of 1812, which are considered by some to be the first national currency.
Those who collect paper money depend on the Friedberg Numbering
System,© a uniform method of cataloguing currency that is accepted
as the international standard for American currency. The numbering
shorthand, along with hundreds of black and white photographs, enables
anyone to instantly locate a specific banknote, and allows a dealer
to advertise a note without need of extensive description. Those
who thought that U.S. currency was just a monotonous progression
of "greenbacks" will be pleasantly surprised. A full twenty pages
of color illustrations show American paper money as indisputable
works of art and beauty. The notes represent the core of one of
the world's finest assemblages of American paper money - that of
the Aubrey and Adeline Bebee Collection at the American Numismatic
Association. The Bebees, late of Omaha, Nebraska formed a nearly
complete collection of United States large size notes and bequeathed
it to the A.N.A. Not only are many of the specimens in the finest
state of preservation possible, but some are also so extremely rare
that they may only be seen on the pages of the book or at the Association.
The attractive, hard-bound book also includes a price appreciation
chart showing the advancement in value of U.S. currency from 1953
to the present. The price escalation, particularly for choice specimens
of paper money has continued virtually unabated since the last edition
of the book in 1998. Auction and private sale prices have moved
to record levels, which the pricing guide portion of the book reveals.
Leading experts from across the country participated in providing
information, including 75 active dealers who provided current pricing.
The 340 page hardbound book retails for $38.75 (+$4.50 P&H).
